O'Neil joined O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. She advanced into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled with her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by judges, but she suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks as well as the Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the bottom 3 and bottom 2 respectively. Judges were amazed by her performance, and recommended viewers to select singers who were well-known, such as Melissa. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after an impressive string of performance. O'Neil, Rex Goudie and Werner delivered two spectacular performances in September of 2005. Werner reportedly said that the headlines would state that O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was the first female, and youngest winner in the time of the show. O'Neil was contacted shortly after her win from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
